A walker crossing the woodland floor

Field guide · Radial

The Walker

A many-legged ambush hunter that waits dark and still in the trees above the water.

Walkers spend the day in deep water, scavenging. At the colony’s hour they cross to the trees, climb, and wait perched and dark above the paths. Prey that passes underneath is dropped on and held.

Their organic photophores react to what is around them: dark and still on the perch, a flare as they drop, a ripple when lit or touched. Light on a perched walker makes it hold off and move away.

You can tame one. It is meant to be very hard.

Field notes

  • Look up before you walk under trees near deep water at dusk.
  • Carry a light.
