Glass Salamanders swim the clear shallows and streams. Their skin is translucent enough to show the skeleton and the gill arches beneath, and they are fragile: where they thrive, the water is clean.
They spawn in water, and they are prey for herons and anything else patient enough to wait.
Field notes
- Count them along a stream: fewer salamanders mean the water has changed.
- Herons know where they are; so should you.
